Why Furniture Comes Back
Consumer survey data (Narvar and PowerReviews, as compiled in our visual-commerce guide) puts the reasons in stark order:
~58% — size, fit or spatial issues. The piece didn't fit the room, the doorway, or the buyer's mental picture of it. By far the largest and the most preventable bucket: it's an information failure, not a product failure.
~22% — "looked different than expected." Colour, material or finish didn't match the images. The second information failure.
~12% — product defects. The only bucket that's genuinely about the product.
Read those numbers again: roughly four out of five furniture returns trace back to the listing's images and information, not to the furniture. That is why imagery is a returns lever, not just a conversion lever.
What a Furniture Return Actually Costs
For large items, a single return typically runs $100–$200 once you add outbound shipping already spent, return shipping, inspection and restocking labour — and unlike apparel, a returned sofa often can't be resold as new, so write-downs and open-box discounts eat the remainder.
Worked example we use with sellers: 1,000 orders a year at an 8% return rate is 80 returns. If ~a quarter are size-related (a conservative reading of the survey data above), that's $2,000–$4,000 a year burned on a problem better images can attack — per thousand orders. Across a 500-SKU catalog, size-related returns quietly become a five-figure line item.
What Better Images Measurably Change
Two findings from our own platform data (disclosure: OmniRoom is our product):
True-to-size renders get kept 4.5× more. Staged scenes generated with the product's real measurements are downloaded at 27%, versus 6% for scenes left on category-default sizes. When proportions are right, images survive the seller's own quality bar — and the buyer's instinctive size-check on the listing.
